How to use the salary calculator

  1. Enter your pay amount and choose the period it covers — per hour, day, week, two weeks, half month, month or year.
  2. Set your hours per week and days per week.
  3. Set paid weeks per year. Salaried employees with paid time off use 52; hourly workers should subtract any unpaid weeks.
  4. See your equivalent pay for every period in the results table.

How to convert hourly pay to salary

Annual salary = hourly rate × hours per week × weeks per year

A standard full-time year is 40 hours × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours. So $25 an hour equals $25 × 2,080 = $52,000 a year. To go the other way, divide annual salary by 2,080: a $60,000 salary is about $28.85 an hour.

Quick mental math: double the hourly rate and add three zeros for an approximate annual salary. $25/hour → about $50,000/year (the exact figure at 2,080 hours is $52,000).

Biweekly vs. semimonthly pay

Biweekly means every two weeks — 26 paychecks a year, so two months each year have three paydays. Semimonthly means twice a month, usually on the 15th and last day — 24 paychecks a year. With the same annual salary, each semimonthly paycheck is slightly larger than a biweekly one.

Gross vs. net pay

This calculator shows gross pay. Your take-home (net) pay will be lower after federal and state income tax, Social Security and Medicare, and deductions such as health insurance or retirement contributions. Your employer's pay stub shows the exact breakdown.

Frequently asked questions

How many work hours are in a year?

A full-time schedule of 40 hours per week for 52 weeks equals 2,080 hours per year. If you take two weeks of unpaid leave, it is 40 × 50 = 2,000 hours.

How much is $20 an hour per year?

At 40 hours per week for 52 weeks, $20 an hour is $41,600 per year before taxes, or about $3,467 per month.

How do I convert an annual salary to an hourly rate?

Divide the annual salary by the number of hours you work per year. For a standard 2,080-hour year, a $50,000 salary equals about $24.04 per hour.

Is this salary before or after taxes?

All figures are gross pay — the amount before taxes and deductions. Your take-home pay will be lower depending on your tax situation and benefits.

What is the difference between biweekly and semimonthly?

Biweekly pay comes every two weeks (26 paychecks a year). Semimonthly pay comes twice a month (24 paychecks a year), so each semimonthly check is a little larger.
