How to use the ideal weight calculator
Select your units and sex, then enter your height. The calculator shows the average of four classic ideal body weight (IBW) formulas, each formula's result, and the weight range that corresponds to a healthy BMI of 18.5–24.9 for your height.
Ideal body weight formulas
Each formula starts with a base weight for a height of 5 feet (152.4 cm) and adds a fixed amount for every inch above that:
| Formula | Men | Women |
|---|---|---|
| Robinson (1983) | 52 kg + 1.9 kg per inch | 49 kg + 1.7 kg per inch |
| Miller (1983) | 56.2 kg + 1.41 kg per inch | 53.1 kg + 1.36 kg per inch |
| Devine (1974) | 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch | 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg per inch |
| Hamwi (1964) | 48 kg + 2.7 kg per inch | 45.5 kg + 2.2 kg per inch |
The Devine formula is still widely used in medicine — for example to calculate drug dosages — while the BMI range is the most common public health guideline.
Example
For a man who is 5 ft 10 in (10 inches over 5 feet):
- Robinson: 52 + 1.9 × 10 = 71.0 kg (156.5 lb)
- Miller: 56.2 + 1.41 × 10 = 70.3 kg (155.0 lb)
- Devine: 50 + 2.3 × 10 = 73.0 kg (160.9 lb)
- Hamwi: 48 + 2.7 × 10 = 75.0 kg (165.3 lb)
The average is about 72.3 kg (159.4 lb), and a healthy BMI range for that height is roughly 129–173 lb.
Why "ideal weight" is a range, not a number
These formulas were created decades ago, mostly for medical dosing, and they don't account for muscle mass, frame size, age or body composition. Two people of the same height can be equally healthy at weights 20 pounds apart. Use the results as a reasonable target range, and consider your body fat percentage and waist size as well.
Frequently asked questions
What is my ideal weight for my height?
It depends on your height and sex. For example, for a 5 ft 10 in man the common formulas give about 155–165 lb, and a healthy BMI range is about 129–173 lb. Enter your height above for your personal range.
Which ideal weight formula is the most accurate?
No single formula is best for everyone. The Devine formula is the most widely used in medicine, and the healthy BMI range is the most common guideline. Looking at the range across formulas gives the most balanced view.
Does ideal weight depend on age?
The classic formulas do not include age. However, healthy body composition changes as we age, and some research suggests a slightly higher BMI may be acceptable for older adults. Ask your doctor what is right for you.
Does frame size affect ideal weight?
Yes. People with a larger bone structure naturally weigh more. A common adjustment is to add about 10% for a large frame and subtract about 10% for a small frame.
Is ideal body weight the same as a healthy weight?
Not exactly. Ideal body weight formulas give a single estimate, while a healthy weight is a range in which health risks are lowest. Muscle mass, fitness and overall health matter more than hitting an exact number.
