Time Calculator

Add or subtract two lengths of time in hours, minutes and seconds — for example, total up workout splits, video lengths or hours on a time sheet. The result is shown in several formats, including decimal hours.

Operation
Total time
4 h 16 min 15 s
hh:mm:ss
4:16:15
Decimal hours
4.2708 h
Total minutes
256.25 min
Total seconds
15,375 s
How it was calculated
  1. Convert to seconds: 9,930 s + 5,445 s = 15,375 s
  2. Convert back: 15,375 s = 4 h 16 min 15 s

How to use the time calculator

  1. Enter the first time in hours, minutes and seconds. Leave any part you don't need at 0.
  2. Choose Add or Subtract.
  3. Enter the second time.
  4. See the result in h/min/s, hh:mm:ss, decimal hours, total minutes and total seconds.

You can type values larger than 60 — for example, 90 minutes — and the calculator will carry them over correctly.

How to add time by hand

  1. Add the seconds, minutes and hours separately.
  2. If the seconds are 60 or more, subtract 60 and carry 1 minute.
  3. If the minutes are 60 or more, subtract 60 and carry 1 hour.

Example: 2 h 45 min 30 s + 1 h 30 min 45 s: seconds 30 + 45 = 75 → 15 s, carry 1 min. Minutes 45 + 30 + 1 = 76 → 16 min, carry 1 h. Hours 2 + 1 + 1 = 4. Total: 4 h 16 min 15 s.

How to subtract time

Subtract seconds, then minutes, then hours. If you need more seconds or minutes, borrow 1 minute (60 seconds) or 1 hour (60 minutes) from the next column. 2 h 45 min 30 s − 1 h 30 min 45 s = 1 h 14 min 45 s.

Converting to decimal hours

Payroll and time sheets often need decimal hours. Divide the minutes by 60 and the seconds by 3,600, then add them to the hours:

decimal hours = hours + minutes ÷ 60 + seconds ÷ 3600

200.33500.83

To find the time between a start and an end time on the clock, use the hours calculator; to count days between dates, use the date calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add hours and minutes?

Add the hours and minutes separately. If the minutes total 60 or more, subtract 60 and add 1 to the hours. 1 h 50 min + 2 h 25 min = 3 h 75 min = 4 h 15 min.

How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?

Divide the minutes by 60. 45 minutes is 0.75 hours, so 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 hours.

How do I subtract times?

Subtract seconds, minutes and hours separately, borrowing 60 from the next larger unit when needed. 3 h 10 min − 1 h 40 min = 2 h 70 min − 1 h 40 min = 1 h 30 min.

How many seconds are in an hour?

There are 3,600 seconds in an hour (60 minutes × 60 seconds) and 86,400 seconds in a day.

Can I add more than two times?

Add the first two, then enter the result as the first time and add the next one. For many entries, convert each to decimal hours and add them up.
