How it was calculated
  1. Weighted grade = Σ(grade × weight) ÷ Σ(weight) = 8,250 ÷ 100 = 82.5%

How to use the grade calculator

  1. For each assignment or category (homework, quizzes, midterm, final…), enter the grade you received as a percentage.
  2. Enter its weight — how much it counts toward the final grade, as listed in your syllabus.
  3. Leave unused rows empty. Your weighted average and letter grade update instantly.

If your class uses points instead of weights, enter each score as a percentage and use the points possible as the weight — the result is the same.

How to calculate a weighted grade

Weighted grade = (grade₁ × weight₁ + grade₂ × weight₂ + …) ÷ (weight₁ + weight₂ + …)

Example: homework 90% (worth 20%), quizzes 85% (worth 30%) and the midterm 78% (worth 50%):

(90 × 20 + 85 × 30 + 78 × 50) ÷ 100 = (1,800 + 2,550 + 3,900) ÷ 100 = 82.5%, a B−.

This is the most common US scale; your school's cutoffs may differ slightly.

What if the weights don't add up to 100%?

That usually means part of the course is still to come. The calculator divides by the weights you entered, so the result is your current grade on the work completed so far. To find out what you need on the remaining work, use the final grade calculator, and turn class grades into a GPA with the GPA calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my grade?

Multiply each grade by its weight, add the results, and divide by the total of the weights. With 90% (20%), 85% (30%) and 78% (50%), the grade is 82.5%.

How do weighted grades work?

Each category counts in proportion to its weight. A final exam worth 40% has twice the effect of a project worth 20%, even if they have the same number of points.

What letter grade is 82.5%?

On the standard US scale, 80% to 82.99% is a B−, so 82.5% is a B−. Some schools round 82.5 up or use different cutoffs.

How do I calculate my grade with points?

Divide the total points you earned by the total points possible and multiply by 100. 425 out of 500 points is 85%.

What do I need on my final to get an A?

Use the final grade calculator: enter your current grade, the grade you want and the weight of the final exam to see the score you need.

Results are rounded for display. For academic or professional work, double-check critical calculations and follow the rounding rules your teacher, school or organization requires.
