How to use the tip calculator
- Enter the bill amount. Many people tip on the pre-tax amount; others use the total — either is fine.
- Enter the tip percentage you want to leave.
- Enter the number of people splitting the bill.
- Optionally round up the tip, the total or each person's share to make paying in cash easier.
How to calculate a tip
Example: for an $85 bill with an 18% tip, the tip is 85 × 0.18 = $15.30 and the total is $100.30. Split between two people, each pays $50.15.
Quick mental math for tips
- 10%: move the decimal point one place left. 10% of $64 is $6.40.
- 20%: double the 10% amount. 20% of $64 is $12.80.
- 15%: 10% plus half of that. 15% of $64 is $6.40 + $3.20 = $9.60.
- 18%: 20% minus 2% (2% is one-fifth of 10%). 18% of $64 is $12.80 − $1.28 = $11.52.

Frequently asked questions
How much should I tip at a restaurant?
In the United States, 15% to 20% of the pre-tax bill is standard for sit-down service, with 18% to 20% common for good service. You can tip more for excellent service.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Etiquette experts generally say tipping on the pre-tax amount is acceptable, but many people tip on the total for simplicity. The difference is usually small.
How do I calculate a 20% tip quickly?
Find 10% by moving the decimal point one place to the left, then double it. For a $47 bill, 10% is $4.70, so 20% is $9.40.
How do I split a bill with a tip?
Add the tip to the bill to get the total, then divide by the number of people. Enter the number of people above and the calculator shows each person's share.
Do I tip on takeout?
Tipping on takeout is optional in the U.S. Many people leave around 10% for large or complicated orders, but it is not expected in the same way as table service.
