Discount Calculator

Find the final price after a discount and see exactly how much you save. Stack an extra discount, like a coupon on top of a sale, and add sales tax for the real checkout price.

How to use the discount calculator

  1. Enter the original price of the item.
  2. Enter the discount percentage (for example, 25 for "25% off").
  3. If there's an additional coupon or "extra % off" deal, enter it as an extra discount.
  4. Add your sales tax rate to see the final checkout price.

How to calculate a discount

Sale price = original price × (1 − discount ÷ 100) Amount saved = original price − sale price

Example: an item that costs $120 with 25% off has a sale price of 120 × 0.75 = $90. You save $30.

Stacked discounts are not added together

When a store offers "an extra 10% off sale prices," the second discount applies to the already-reduced price — so 25% off plus an extra 10% off is not 35% off.

Final price = price × (1 − d1) × (1 − d2)

Using the example above: $120 × 0.75 = $90, then $90 × 0.90 = $81. The combined discount is 32.5%, not 35%. The order of the discounts doesn't change the final price.

Finding the discount percentage

If you know the original and sale prices, the discount is (original − sale) ÷ original × 100. A jacket reduced from $80 to $60 is (80 − 60) ÷ 80 × 100 = 25% off. You can also use the percentage calculator for this.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a percentage discount?

Multiply the original price by the discount percentage divided by 100 to find the savings, then subtract it from the original price. For example, 30% off $70 is $70 − $21 = $49.

Is 20% off plus an extra 20% off the same as 40% off?

No. The second discount applies to the reduced price, so 20% off followed by 20% off equals 36% off in total, not 40%.

How do I find the original price from a sale price?

Divide the sale price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). If an item costs $60 after 25% off, the original price was $60 ÷ 0.75 = $80.

Is sales tax calculated before or after a discount?

In most U.S. states, sales tax is calculated on the discounted price you actually pay. Manufacturer coupons can be treated differently in some states.

What is the formula for percent off?

Percent off = (original price − sale price) ÷ original price × 100.
