How to convert kilobytes to megabytes
One kilobyte equals 0.001 megabytes. To convert, multiply the number of kilobytes by 0.001 (or divide by 1,000):
Mental-math shortcut: Divide kilobytes by 1,000: 2,500 KB = 2.5 MB (about 2.38 MiB in binary units).
Example
Convert 2,500 kilobytes to megabytes: 2,500 KB × 0.001 = 2.5 MB.

What is a kilobyte?
A kilobyte (KB) is 1,000 bytes in the decimal (SI) system used by storage makers, macOS and most internet speeds. Windows and some older software use the binary convention, where a "kilobyte" is 1,024 bytes — properly called a kibibyte (KiB). A page of plain text is roughly 2–4 KB.
What is a megabyte?
A megabyte (MB) is 1,000,000 bytes, or 1,000 kilobytes, in the decimal system. In the binary convention used by Windows, a "megabyte" means 1,048,576 bytes (a mebibyte, MiB). A smartphone photo is typically 2–5 MB, and a minute of MP3 music is about 1 MB.
